Environmental Conservation is a key priority for MAWAKI as the organization works with communities to protect natural resources and promote sustainable environmental practices. Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, MAWAKI is encouraging citizens and institutions to take an active role in restoring and protecting the environment.

Many communities face environmental challenges such as deforestation, land degradation, and declining tree cover. Without consistent reforestation efforts, these problems can lead to soil erosion, reduced rainfall retention, and long-term environmental damage that affects agriculture and livelihoods.

To address these challenges, MAWAKI strengthened its Environmental Conservation efforts through a partnership with the Hakuna Matata initiative. Together, they raised and distributed tree seedlings to promote reforestation and environmental awareness within local communities.

Through this collaboration, Environmental Conservation activities focused on providing free seedlings to institutions such as schools and community groups, as well as individual citizens committed to planting and nurturing trees.

The Environmental Conservation initiative achieved significant results through community participation:

13,000 tree seedlings were raised and distributed to institutions and local citizens.

Schools, community organizations, and households participated in tree planting activities.

The initiative helped increase awareness about the importance of protecting forests and restoring degraded land.

By expanding Environmental Conservation efforts, MAWAKI is helping communities take meaningful action to restore ecosystems and secure a healthier environment for future generations.

Looking ahead, MAWAKI plans to strengthen its Environmental Conservation programs by increasing seedling production, engaging more institutions, and encouraging community-led tree planting initiatives that promote long-term environmental sustainability.

Support for the Vulnerable remains a central pillar of MAWAKI’s commitment to improving the wellbeing of disadvantaged families. In 2024, the organization expanded its assistance to ensure that individuals facing economic hardship could still access essential healthcare and livelihood opportunities.

Many families in rural communities struggle to afford basic healthcare services, nutritious food for infants, and capital to start small businesses or agricultural activities. Without support, vulnerable individuals often delay medical treatment or remain trapped in cycles of poverty due to limited financial resources.

Through its Support for the Vulnerable initiative, MAWAKI provided targeted assistance to individuals and families facing urgent needs. The program helped people access hospital services, covered critical medical costs, supported infant nutrition, and offered small financial loans to help community members rebuild or expand their livelihoods.

The results of Support for the Vulnerable in 2024 demonstrate the importance of community-based assistance:

28 people received hospital services, enabling them to access timely medical treatment.

73 individuals had their medical fees covered, ensuring they could receive care without financial barriers.

3 infants received milk support, helping vulnerable children access proper nutrition during early development.

25 people received small loans to support agricultural inputs or start small businesses.

Through Support for the Vulnerable, MAWAKI continues to ensure that no one in the community is left behind when facing health or economic challenges.

Looking ahead, MAWAKI aims to expand Support for the Vulnerable so that more families can access healthcare, nutrition, and financial opportunities. By strengthening community support systems, the initiative seeks to build resilience and empower vulnerable individuals to achieve long-term wellbeing and economic stability.

Lift for Life: A Lifeline on Four Wheels

Lift for Life is transforming access to emergency healthcare in remote villages of Kilolo District by providing life-saving transport for pregnant women and vulnerable patients who struggle to reach medical facilities during critical moments.

The Challenge

In villages such as Ng’uruhe, Ukumbi, and Mtitu, distance and poor road infrastructure make it extremely difficult for expectant mothers to reach hospitals in time. Many women face the dangerous reality of traveling long distances during labor without reliable transport. In such situations, delays can mean the difference between life and death.

The Intervention

Lift for Life, implemented by MAWAKI, serves as a mobile bridge between remote communities and life-saving medical care. Through the use of organization vehicles, the initiative transports pregnant women, accident victims, and critically ill patients to healthcare facilities such as the Iringa District Designated Hospital (Tosamaganga) and the Iringa Regional Referral Hospital.

To maintain sustainability, beneficiaries contribute small amounts toward fuel costs, while MAWAKI fully supports the most vulnerable families who cannot afford to pay. By removing transport barriers, this ensures that mothers and patients receive timely and professional medical care.

The Impact (2025)

The results of Lift for Life in 2025 highlight the critical role of emergency transport in rural healthcare access:

Zero Maternal Mortality: In the communities served by Lift for Life, no pregnant woman lost her life during childbirth or while being transported to a health facility.

45 Safe Deliveries: A total of 45 expectant mothers were transported safely to hospitals where they delivered under professional medical care.

Emergency Support: The initiative also provided urgent transportation for 192 patients requiring medical attention and 23 victims of accidents.

A Vision for the Future

Despite challenges such as deteriorating rural roads and delayed payments of over 3 million TZS from the government through the mMama Program partnership, Lift for Life continues to serve as a vital safety net for communities in Kilolo. With continued support and partnerships, Lift for Life aims to expand its services so that no mother in rural Tanzania is left without safe transportation during childbirth emergencies.
